The Twin Terrors -Past & Present

At the moment, my CPF portfolio has not performed as well as both my Cash portfolio and SRS portfolio.  Reasons being that l have suffered twin terrors effect in my investment using CPF funds.

l was way too careless to be involved in speculative investment back then when l have invested into Wilmar and Olam.  l did not even know back then that both Wilmar and Olam are speculative stocks. And by the time l knew of their speculative traits my CPF portfolio already suffered combined paper losses of $8.2k on Wilmar and Olam.  It was a hard decision made but l needed a reboot at some point of time so these were sold off and hence l have suffered huge realized losses on them.  Buy and holding these twin terrors is not good thing so it's better to divest them away.

Spiltting headache over Olam and Wilmar

Au revoir Wilmar

In the present moment l have another new twin terrors in my CPF portfolio - Capitaland and SembMar.   Both are good blue chips companies.  l am keeping both for now as these are not speculative stocks and both still have good growth story on them.

CPF - Closing Status 7 June

Received CPF investment statement from the bank this week.  In it there were several dividends received in the month of May :- SPH $11, SembCorp Industries $300, SembCorp Marine $160, Capitaland $280.  I am stuck with my investment in these companies as their share price levels are now much lower.  CPF interest rate remains at 2.5% so ideally the dividend yield in these companies should be higher.  Using expected annual dividend rate against my investment costs in them so the expected dividend yield will be at :- SPH 3.6%, SembCorp Industries 2.9%, Capitaland 1.7%, SembCorp Marine 2.2%.  So, SPH and SembCorp Industries are good problem to have but not on Capitaland and SembCorp Marine.    Banks charges certain costs (quarterly bank charges, $2.50 per l lot of share, and other smaller charges) under the CPF investment scheme so investments using CPF funds will be quite expensive.  Investing into companies not paying dividends or paying very little dividends using CPF funds is a very unwise move especially when getting stuck with the investments due to lowered share price levels.  Back to my CPF portfolio, current pot is much better than the ones in the earlier months and years.  Reason for the realized negative returns so far was because of divestments of certain incorrect investments which were quite speculative back then.  Waiting for share prices to go back up again so that l can make further changes to current pot.

CPF - Closing Status 8 Mar

Under CPF portfolio this week, l have added Capitaland 3 lots so my total holding in it now at 4 lotsAnd its share price started moving lower since then.  The only reason l can think of that causing its share price to go lower is because of China property curbs to cool property prices.  Property companies like Capitaland will be able to find ways around it somehow.  It is really a knee jerk effect that the share price of property counters gone lower at the moment.  Their share price recovery will happen really soon.

I have invested into SIA Engineering 2 lots this week under my CPF portfolio.  For 9M2013, both revenue and profit were almost at par to previous year.  Last year there was an exchange gain of $7.5 mil but in this year it recorded an exchange loss of $2.1 mil.  I think it is a good deal to invest into SIA Engineering expecially when its dividend yield is at 4.6%There is no borrowings as of 9M2013.

CPF - Closing Status 1 Feb

I have SingPost 11 lots in my CPF portfolio and l have sold it all away this week.  Unfortunately, l have entered my sell order as 12 lots hence l have oversold by 1 lot.   I am now faced with a possible $1k penalty charge on my overselling position which will wipe out the $184 nett gain on the 11 lots sold.  This SingPost 11 lots was purchased in Oct'10 and now that it is already in profitable position so l have decided to sell it all away.  SingPost will XD on 7 Feb and for 11 lots l will get $138 dividends (11 lots x $0.0125) if l hold on to it till then.  But l have decided to collect this dividend in advance when l have sold it all away for a nett gain of $184.

In this week l have also sold away Capitaland 3 lots under my CPF portfolio for a nett gain of $412.  This 3 lots holding was purchased back in Nov'10; l have remaining 1 lot which was purchased in Aug'08.  Capitaland is expected to release  its full year results around mid Feb'13 and is likely to increase its total dividends rates as almost all its subsidiary companies have already reported higher revenue and profit.  Two weeks ago l have invested into Capitaland for 3 lots and sold it away for a nett gain of $536.  The total nett gain $948 ($412 + $536) is easily more than two times its annual dividend amount on 3 lots of shares.  l will not re-invest into it based on friday's closing share price at $3.98 as there is possibility that l would be stuck with this investment at this price level.   A price level of $3.70 and below will be ideal for me to re-invest into Capitaland.

CPF - Closing Status 18 Jan

I have finally received the Dec'12 cpf investment statement from the bank and expected transactions in my previous posting came in the same figures.

In my cpf portfolio l have existing counter on Olam 3 lots and and hence l am given Olam Rights of 0.939 lot.  In this week l have sold away my 'nil paid' Olam Rights 0.939 lot for a profit of $34.  I have an intention to sell away my current position on Olam 3 lots some time this year and l would definitely book a huge loss for it; current paper loss status is at $4,777 !!!

I have invested into Capitaland 3 lots this week under cpf portfolio.  Initially the purpose of this additional investment into Capitaland is to do lower cost averaging.  But l could not resist selling the same 3 lots away in the same week for a nett gain of $536.  There is an opportunity to do another lower cost averaging against my current position on Capitaland 4 lots (currently at paper loss status of $707) in some other time when its share price weakens.

CPF - Closing Status 25 Nov (unrealised stocks status)

Difficult to sell these negative returns stocks - Capitaland, SingPost, Olam and Wilmar as the share market is in very bad shape now.  Paper loss of $14.5k is really too heavy to shoulder so, will not consider their disposal for re-investment.
